Surface Area Calc

Surface Area Calculator

We use a surface area calculator to measure any three-dimentional shape's total area. This calculation is crucial in various fields, including engineering, architecture, and everyday applications like painting or packaging. By providing the surface area of an object, this tool helps determine material requirements and understand spatial relationships.

What is Surface Area?

Total area of a three-dimensional object is called its surface area. It is different from volume, which measures the space inside the object. So, there are many types of shapes and also the method to find the area of that shape is also different depending upon the shape. So, some common shapes are;

Where:

  • s is the side length of the cube,
  • l, w, and h are used for the length, width, and height of a rectangular prism,
  • r is the radius of the sphere or cylinder,
  • h is the height of the cylinder,
  • l is the slant height of the cone.

How to Use the Surface Area Calculator?

Using our Surface Area Calculator involves a few simple steps:

  1. Select the Shape: Choose the geometric shape to calculate the surface area. Options typically include cubes, rectangular prisms, spheres, cylinders, and cones.
  2. Enter Dimensions: Input the necessary dimensions for the selected shape. For a cube, you’ll need the side length. For a sphere, enter the radius, and so on.
  3. Perform the Calculation: Click the “Calculate” button after entering the dimensions. The calculator will process the data and provide the object's surface area.

The result will display the surface area, usually in square units such as square meters or square feet.

Example;

Let’s use an example to demonstrate how the Surface Area Calculator works.

Problem: Calculate the surface area of a cylinder with the following dimensions:

  • Radius (r): 5 cm
  • Height (h): 10 cm

Solution

  • The formula for the surface area of a cylinder is A = 2 x x r x (r+h).
  • Substitute the given values into the formula:

A = 2 x x r x (r+h)

A = 2 x x r x (5+10)

A = 2 x x 75

A = 150

  • Using = 3.14159

A 150 x 3.14159

A 471.24 cm2

Result: The surface area of the cylinder is approximately 471.24 square centimetres.
